ABOUT US

PIERU (Pride Initiative for Eastern Region Uganda) is a non governmental human rights advocacy community based organization (CBO) whose mission is to promote human rights, sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR), HIV/AIDS sensitization, advocacy and empowerment of LGBTIQA+ persons and sex workers in the community through human rights awareness, HIV sensitization, research and advocacy, capacity enhancement and empowerment.
PIERU’s work is directed towards achieving equality, nondiscrimination, promote human rights, sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR), HIV/AIDS sensitization, advocacy and empowerment of the most at risk populations and the marginalised groups in Uganda.

The site is designed to provide information about PIERU, the human rights work that we do, key developments in the field of Human Rights in Uganda especially Eastern region specifically Busoga Region and access to various publications that PIERU has developed. It is updated periodically with the latest information.

PIERU is an independent, non partisan, non governmental human rights advocacy organization. It was founded in 2019 by a group of three individuals after one of them was terminated from employment because of being a gay.

PIERU seeks to create awareness and promote human rights, sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR), HIV/AIDS sensitization, advocacy and empowerment of the LGBTIQ+ persons in community.

PIERU is fully registered under the laws of Uganda. 

OBJECTIVES

  1. To conduct baseline studies and community diagnosis to identify required needs and interventions on Human Rights, HIV/AIDS and SHRH, relevant to all LGBTIQA+ persons and sex workers
  2. To deliver information and education about Human Rights, HIV/AIDS, and sexual and health rights to the LGBTIQA+ population and sex workers
  3. To influence Uganda’s mainstream Human Rights and HIV/AIDS combating mechanisms with regard to Human Rights knowledge and promotion, and appropriate strategies for HIV/AIDS key populations
  4. To foster networking and collaboration with key strategic partners including but not limited to government and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), both at community and national level
  5. To promote access to justice for LGBTIQA+ persons and sex workers
  6. To undertake research and legal advocacy for the rights of LGBTIQA+ people and sex workers
  7. To network and collaborate with key strategic partners, government, communities and individuals at national, regional and international level
  8. To enhance the capacity of LGBTIQA+ groups and key stakeholders to participate effectively in the promotion and respect of the rights of vulnerable persons
  9. To maintain a strong and vibrant human and health rights organization
